History:

The dawn of “Trim Commercial Tennis Club” was in 1929. Garda James McCabe was hugely instrumental in establishing the Trim Commercial Tennis Club. From 1929 until 1948 the Club was situated at the old Garda barracks. This is the site where Scoil Mhuire is situated today. The Gardai took over the land and buildings from the Old Industrial School, which functioned as a Reformatory School for children, committed by the Courts and an orphanage also.

The local gardai laid three grass courts, converted from vegetable allotments, they prepared the ground, levelled the surface and laid the grass seed themselves.

In 1945 to1948 a second Tennis Club was set up at Trim Castle at the location of the Crimean cannon. This club did not endure.

During this time there were plenty of Inter-Club matches and competitions mostly mixed, between the Trim “Commercial” club and strong Clubs such as Castleknock, Kilmessan, Longwood, North Kildare, Castleknock, Shanco, Duleek and Athboy. Teams arrived by bicycle.

1954 the Industrial School buildings were demolished , so there was an urgent need to search for a new location. A site was bought on Newhaggard Road from the Farrell estate.
Once again the Members undertook the massive work of digging, levelling and preparing the land for new Courts. Grass seed sown and when mature ,precise marking of the courts with lime. Members mowed and maintained these fine courts!

A Club Pavillion was needed, a second hand one was purchased in Wicklow. Petrol coupons had to be collected for its transportation. These were still very hard to come by, due to WW2 rationing. The men involved in the deconstructing, transporting, and reconstruction were Jack O’ Brien, Paddy Mahon and Gerry Lee. There was huge excitement in the town over the arrival of the Pavillion.Tennis was played every evening in Summer until it got dark.

In the 1960s The Club was again raising funds to put in hard courts. Dances were held, with famous showbands like Maurice Mulcahy, Mick Delahunty, The Clipper Carlton and The Mighty Avons. A new Clubhouse was constructed in 1963.
Tennis has thrived in Trim over the years.

Trim Tennis Club looks forward to its Centenary in 2029.
